Jesse Genepi
Jesse Genepi (b.1995) lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. Holding a BFA from the University of Minnesota and an MFA from the University of California-Davis, Genepi's artistic practice draws inspiration from realms of fantasy, science fiction, esotericism, and the rich history of visionary art. Within the realm of digital collage, he embraces the cut-up technique, weaving together diverse influences to craft a syncretic painting process. In doing so, he pays homage to antiquity, philosophy, and alchemical practices, resulting in intricately layered artworks that manipulate light and space.
Through his art, Genepi seeks to generate a visual lexicon, an encoded narrative that invokes ancient wisdom and sparks contemplation. These evocative thought forms manifest as densely layered paintings, where the convergence of colors, textures, and brushstrokes encapsulate the complex interplay of human relationships and emotions within an imagined thought space. Upon closer examination, the surfaces reveal a captivating landscape of vivid hues, metallic shimmer, and accumulations of marks, inviting an active viewing experience that oscillates between the picture plane and the illusion of depth achieved through forced perspective.
